The possible risks of proton pump inhibitors.

چکیده
5 roton pump inhibitors (PPIs) suppress gastric acid secretion by selectively inhibiting the enzyme P hydrogenepotassium adenosine triphosphatase, located in gastric parietal cells. These drugs superseded H2-receptor antagonists as first-line acid suppressants in the 1980s, and their potent effect has revolutionised the management of common upper gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, including gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, peptic ulcer disease, and functional dyspepsia. These drugs are alsowidely used aspart of regimensdesigned to eradicate Helicobacter pylori infection, and as prophylaxis against the deleterious effects of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs on the GI tract.

Prevalent Prescribing of Proton Pump Inhibitors: Prudent or Pernicious?
ABSTRACT In recent years, the “user-friendly” profile of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) has resulted in their increased use for a variety of gastrointestinal conditions. Indeed, this trend has been spurred by the profound ability of these agents to decrease gastric acid as well as by their perceived lack of drug interactions and adverse effects. However, recent data suggest possible negative ram...
متن کاملProton Pump Inhibitor use in Hospitalized Patients: Is Overutilization Becoming a Problem?
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are among the most common classes of medications prescribed. Though they were previously thought of as safe, recent literature has shown risks associated with their use including increased risk for Clostridium difficile infection, pneumonia, and fractures. Due to these risks, it is important to determine if PPIs are being used appropriately. This review evaluates s...
متن کاملClinical Roundtable Monograph
Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly prescribed for the management of upper gastrointestinal tract disorders, and over 2 decades of use have demonstrated that these drugs provide significant clinical benefits with very few serious acute adverse events. However, several recent reports have suggested that short-term and long-term PPI treatment may be associated with certain risks. Specifica...
متن کاملChronic Asthma and Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease: The Treatment Plans
Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) regularly occurs when stomach acid moves up from the stomach into the esophagus. GERD might be associated with chronic asthma symptoms such as coughing and breathlessness. According to several studies on children and adults, GERD is proven to have a close relationship with asthma. Medication treatment via proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs), such as Omeprazole,...
متن کاملProton pump inhibitors: Risks of long-term use.
Proton pump inhibitors are among the most commonly prescribed classes of drugs, and their use is increasing, in particular for long-term treatment, often being over-prescribed and used for inappropriate conditions. In recent years, considerable attention has been directed towards a wide range of adverse effects, and even when a potential underlying biological mechanism is plausible, the clinica...
متن کاملProton Pump Inhibitors and Corticosteroids as Synergistic Risk Factors for Candida Esophagitis
Introduction: Inhaled & systemic steroids are one of the well-documented risks factors for Candida esophagitis. However, the role of gastric acid suppression remains controversial. Methods: We conducted a retrospective case-control study of 420 patients consisting of 84 cases of Candida esophagitis and 336 matched controls. Our cohort was gathered from subjects evaluated from 2001 to 2012. The ...
